Debunking Greta Thunberg’s “Zionism is Racism” rant

Greta Thunberg has done something that should concern anyone who cares about justice, consistency, and the difference between criticism and erasure. She endorsed a motion that defines Zionism, the belief that Jews have a right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland, as racism. And she did so while burning France to the ground, and helping Iran wipe out the West’s AI infrastructure!

What Happened?

In August 2026, members of the Green Party of England and Wales prepared a motion for their annual conference. The motion called for the party to define Zionism as a “racist, settler-colonial ideology” and to declare itself anti-Zionist. In October 2026, the motion passed. 1022 votes to 813.

The motion declares Zionism to be an ideology supporting “an ethnonationalist Jewish state in historic Palestine to the exclusion and/or domination of the non-Jewish population”. Which is clearly not a critique of Israeli policy, but rather, a rejection of Jewish national identity.

The Fact Check

Claim 1: “Zionism is racism”

Verdict: A redefinition, not a description.

Zionism is the movement for Jewish self-determination in the Land of Israel. It emerged as a response to centuries of antisemitic persecution, particularly in Europe. It is the belief that Jews, like every other nation, have the right to a state of their own.

The Green Party’s motion does not engage with this history. It does not distinguish between Zionism as a liberation movement and the policies of any particular Israeli government. It simply declares the entire ideology racist.

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has called the decision “a disgrace,” stating: “Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, and it forms the basis for the Jewish people’s right to a state and a national home in the Land of Israel”.

Claim 2: “This is just criticism of Israel”

Verdict: False. It is a purity test for Jews.

Three major British Jewish groups,: the Board of Deputies, the Community Security Trust, and the Jewish Leadership Council, called the motion “a clear antisemitic text” and warned about “the implications for the safety and welfare of all British Jews”.

The British government’s antisemitism tsar said the policy is “worse than anything that happened under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party”.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has written to the Green Party to assess whether the motion breaches the Equality Act. Dozens of Labour and Lib Dem MPs and Jewish campaigners wrote to the regulator raising concerns about antisemitism.

When the vast majority of British Jews identify as Zionist, a policy that defines Zionism as racism is a policy that defines the vast majority of British Jews as racists. That is not criticism. That is exclusion.

Claim 3: “Greta is just supporting a legitimate political position”

Verdict: Greta has a history.

This is not the first time Greta Thunberg has associated herself with antisemitic rhetoric. In 2023, she was filmed yelling “Crush Zionism!” at a rally in Stockholm. She has repeatedly accused Israel of genocide, and has legitimized Hamas terrorism as a form of “freedom fighting” by leading flotillas to Gaza.

Greta is entitled to her views. But she is not entitled to pretend that endorsing a motion that redefines Jewish national identity as racism, is a neutral act.

Greta’s Permissible Antisemitism Formula

Greta, like many so called Pro-Palestine activists who eventually end up radicalizing into outright antisemites, and even as Neo-Nazis, is on a predictable trajectory:

Step one: Redefine a core element of Jewish identity as racism.

Step two: Claim that opposing this “racism” is a moral imperative.

Step three: Use the language of anti-racism to exclude Jews who identify with their national homeland.

Step four: Give every anti-Israel activist a permission structure. “We’re not antisemitic, we’re anti-racist!”

Greta Thunberg is the face and moral shield of this permission structure, while non-ironically saying, “We are on the side of justice!” But justice does not require redefining a people’s identity as a crime. Because when all the fluff and virtue signaling is removed, the Green Party’s motion is not criticism, it is erasure. It does not say Israel’s policies are racist, it says the belief that Jews have a right to a state is racist.
